Children of all ages and fitness abilities can benefit from martial arts training. Students gain confidence and focus, while increasing their physical stamina and strength. Our curriculum includes traditional forms (hyung), weapons, sparring, and self-defense-- all tailored to the needs of the individual child. Classes are divided by age and belt rank.

Since our founding in 1974, Yi's Karate Cherry Hill has had the opportunity to help countless students acquire foundational skills, develop new techniques and confidently move forward in their learning journey. About Tang Soo Do
Tang Soo Do is one of the oldest Martial arts.. It originated in Korea around 2,000 years ago, and the philosophy and techniques are still being taught today. The kicking techniques of Tang Soo Do are based on the ancient Korean kicking style of Tae Kyun, and the soft flowing movements come from the northern and southern Chinese systems. The word "Tang" originates from a Korean word meaning "to defend and strike." "Soo" means hand, but it may also be interpreted as a punch, a strike, a fist, or a defense. "Do" means a way of life. When you combine the three words, Tang Soo Do means "The Way of the Hand of Tang."

We are proud members of the International Martial Arts Association (IMA) .The IMA is an organization of individuals whose goal is to further the art of Tang Soo Do while preserving the unique heritage and traditions of this time honored art. Members of the IMA work toward the proliferation of the art throughout the world. Founded by Grandmaster Ki Yun Yi in New Jersey, USA, in 1984, the organization now spans four continents. The Answers You Need
HOW HAVE YOUR CLASSES CHANGED IN LIGHT OF COVID 19?
We are following all state guidelines for safety at this time. At present, for the safety of our students and staff, all classes are non-contact. While we continue to run drills and exercises to develop these skills, sparring and self defense have been suspended. No equipment is shared between students. Masks are required for classes, students are required to socially distance, and sanitization efforts have been increased. We are limiting the number of students who are on site for class by reservation while running the classes concurrently on Zoom. Please contact us for more specifics.
WHAT IS THE BEST AGE TO START MARTIAL ARTS?
It truly depends on the child. Some younger children may not have developed the motor skills that are essential for learning certain skills or they may have difficulty retaining the should they learn. We like to assess each child when they first come in to see if they are ready for class and will benefit from it.
For our children's classes (ages 5 – 12), martial arts training offers a non-competitive atmosphere with incredible benefits. Beyond learning real and effective self-defense and Bully Proof skills and maintaining or improving physical fitness, students will develop focus, discipline, respect, self-esteem, goal setting skills, and confidence. And for adults, martial arts training is a great way to improve fitness and flexibility, and to learn practical and effective self defense skills.
HOW MANY TIMES PER WEEK DO STUDENTS ATTEND CLASSES?
Most students attend class twice a week, although some only train one day a week and some choose a program that offers unlimited classes and come as often add they like. The Little Dragons program is one day per week. Each Little Dragons class meets for a half hour, each children's class for 45 minutes, and each adults' class for an hour.
MY CHILD ISN'T VERY ATHLETIC. WILL THEY BE ABLE TO DO MARTIAL ARTS?
Everyone comes into class with their own unique abilities and challenges. We are all individuals after all! No matter what their fitness level, our instructors will tailor instruction to the individual and help them improve their endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility.
WILL TRAINING IN MARTIAL ARTS TURN MY CHILD INTO A BULLY?
Absolutely not! We stress that fighting is a lost resort and only to be used in self defense.
WILL SPARRING BE REQUIRED?
Yes. Sparring is a requirement in our curriculum. Students begin to spar once they have achieved the rank of yellow belt. All sparring is supervised, only light contact is allowed, and protective gear is required.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TRADITIONAL AND NONTRADITIONAL SCHOOL?
All martial arts are different and all schools and associations run a bit differently. In general, non-traditional schools focus on sport and competition. Traditional schools like ours focus on the mental benefits of the art as well as the physical. While competition is always an option, the goal is mastery of the skills and personal improvement. We stress respect, integrity, and perseverance, over trophies and awards.
WHAT ABOUT TOURNAMENTS? IS COMPETING REQUIRED?
There are several opportunities every year to complete and tournament participation is encouraged.
HOW MUCH IS THIS GOING TO COST?
The cost of tuition is determined by a number of factors and varies based on the program and length of membership selected. We do offer discounts for military and first responders. Discounts are also available for multiple family members.
CAN I TRY A CLASS BEFORE I COMMIT?
Absolutely! Put on some comfy clothes that you can move in and come on over! No obligation. No pressure. We want you to be sure you are happy here before making a long term commitment.
WHEN CAN I START?
As soon as you'd like! We don't have sessions or special dates for classes to start. You can start any day that is convenient for you. All new students work one-on-one with an instructor until they are comfortable and able to join the rest of the class for activities.
